Volunteering opportunities at South Lakes Society for the Blind
We offer a number of different opportunities for volunteers to become involved in our work throughout South Lakeland. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and ages, there is no upper age limit!
Volunteer activities include:
Hospital Information Desk - Providing information and support to people attending eye-clinics at the Westmorland General Hospital.
Demonstrating equipment - Showing people the range of equipment which is available for visually impaired people in our Sight Advice Centre in Kendal.
Activity groups - Assisting with one of our various activity groups which include a craft group, walking group, two swimming groups, keep fit, etc.
Local support groups - Helping with local support groups which meet monthly and offer a social contact for people with visual impairments.
Volunteer driving - We always need drivers who are available to transport members to our various activities.
Office and computer skills - Helping in our office in Stricklandgate House.
Visiting scheme - Visiting a visually impaired person in their own home to help with tasks such as reading mail, etc, or accompanying them on short outings.
Fundraising - From special fund-raising events to more traditional coffee mornings and street collections.
SLSB Enterprises - various different roles are available to assist with our enterprises providing Large print diaries and calendars, Braille transcription and recycled computers.
No formal qualifications are required, more important is an interest in people, patience and a willingness to listen. Any training which is needed in a particular volunteering role will be provided by the Society.
